Making Camp

The last in the Enduro Lanka teamwork series. Teamwork doesn’t end when everyone gets back to the campsite. In-fact everyone pitches in with the setting up, cooking and cleaning for dinner. Afterwards two man teams take two hour shifts staying up, to keep the campfire going to make sure no wild animals come straying into the campsite.

Enduro Lanka Trip to Kumana.jpg

We can’t forget that the driver is also an integral part of the offroading team. It takes a certain amount of skill to gently descend into a body of water and then wade across it in a vehicle like this. Although it was specially modified for this kind of thing an inexperienced driver would probably end up going nose first into the river bank. I know I would.

We even moved trees.

Ok, for this post I’m moving on from the muddy road where we got stuck to the rest of the trip. The Enduro Lanka team had to work hard through out the journey so it doesn’t seem fair to only concentrate on a small portion. At this point the road was blocked with overgrown branches but, since this was a protected reserve cutting them was out of the question. So some of us had to hold the branches back while the vehicles passed.

Cutting a path

The third photograph in the Enduro Lanka series. As the pickup was on an incline the path had to be leveled out so it would be easier to winch the vehicle out and to reduce the risk of it tipping over.

Enduro Lanka team working to keep the vehicle from tipping over.

One of our vehicles on the Kumana trip got partly submerged in mud almost four feet deep. The right side of the vehicle was submerged while the left side was on the hard soil and the vehicle was in danger of tipping over. The team managed to tie a rope to it and using a tree as a pulley kept it from tipping over. Four people were needed the rope while another acted as a counter weight by standing on the vehicle itself.

Offroading is a Team Sport

Photographed during an Enduro Lanka off-roading trip to Kumana, this shot shows the importance of team work. The driver and vehicle could not get anywhere without the hard work and support of the crew. I will dedicate this weeks photographs to try and document the hard work each individual in the team put in to get  our two pickups across one hundred meters of thick mud. A feat that took us two hours.

The Bat Tree

The kumbuk tree in my back yard has become home for a colony of bats and every evening they fly off to engage in their nocturnal activities. Some have even ended up stranded inside the house.

Took my first trip down to Galle on the Southern Expressway last weekend. This was the best I could do from the backseat of a moving vehicle. It took us roughly an hour to get to Galle, which is pretty much the same time it takes me to get to Colombo form home in Panadura. I’m sure the drastic cut down in travel time will serve as a great boost for the economy in the south.

I think the heading gives a satisfactory explanation.
