Ranga de Silva

The Jetavanaramaya stupa is said to have been the third tallest structure next to the Great Pyramids of Giza when it was built by King Mahasena (273-301 AD). You can find more detail on this Wiki.

Basically it’s huge. You can’t help but have a sense of awe when you see it up close. The two specks standing at the base are my friends Charlot and Gayan. Kind of gives you an idea as to how large the stupa is.

Was on my way to work this evening when I saw this submerged car just a couple of meters away from the Galle Road in Panadura. All the drains are clogged up with garbage in Panadura so when it rains, a whole stretch of the Galle Road gets flooded.

Yesterday was new year. (Non Srilankans please refer this wiki) All in all it was awesome. Woke up, got dressed, ate, spoke to some friends living abroad and pestered them that I’m at home while they have to work. Haha!!! And went back to sleep only to wake up in the evening to visit my cousins for more food. So hope everyone else’s New Year was as good as mine

Spent the day trudging across a mangrove swamp in Hikkaduwa with some architects, while being eaten alive by ants. Yes folks some architects don’t just sit at home and draw your dream houses. Some of em actually go out to all these god forsaken places and get turned in to gourmet dishes for the local critters to feast on. While some idiot with a camera volunteers to tag along.

Five guys sharing two pairs of boots was never going to be very practical. So they were left in the van.

We decided to try the local cuisine.

Our driver decides to cool off in the shade.

Though I did spend the other half of my day photographing Kosgoda Beach. One of those cushy hotels where they have the best prawns, cuttlefish and fruit salad ice cream that money can buy. Sorry no pics of the food. I was too busy stuffing myself.

All in all an awesome Saturday.

Here’s wishing everyone a happy 2010. This one’s from last night or early this morning. Raja got a bit hi and decided to launch rockets commando style. His technique, firmly grasp rocket, light it, when it gets hot let go and hopefully it won’t explode in your face. Despite a couple of near misses I’m relieved to say no one got hurt.

This is Samantha. I took this photo when I was sent by the Leisure Times to photograph the gallery at Alliance Francaise in Colombo last October. He wanted to sell me his Nikon F5 along with a flash gun for ten thousand rupees. Unfortunately I didn’t have that kind of cash on me so I had to decline, but I did promise him I’d send anyone who wanted a film camera his way.  Though it has been close to seven months since I met him and I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t have had much trouble selling it for such a low price.

BTW, I did some checking up on the F5 on eBay and Amazon, and the cheapest I could find cost 40k with shipping to Sri Lanka. Hmm, may be I should have borrowed the 10k from a friend. But, given the cost of film, I never would have used it.
