Making coffee at The Coffee Shop at Galadari. Another one from the coffee feature for the Leisure Times. He’s making an Irish coffee, which is more of a cocktail than the usual cup of coffee.

More rejects from the feature on coffee shops. Our initial idea for the layout of the article was for a messy coffee table with loads of pictures of spilt coffee. But, I kind of got carried away with the whole idea and the photographs were too messy to use.
For anyone who’s interested, this is how I took these photographs. Basically I couldn’t really afford any lights so I waited till noon and took everything outside. Placed everything on top of two sheets of A4 paper and shot everything in direct sunlight. Copied the pics onto the PC and increased exposure to give the white A4 paper a glow and everything was done.
On another note, I’ve gotten myself a Twitter account. Well I’ve had it for a while but didn’t really use it. So I thought I’d try updating it to see what happens. I thought I’d update it with anything interesting I find on the net (pictures, videos, etc…), and of course any new posts from the blog and my flickr portfolio. So if you’re interested, add me on twitter (http://twitter.com/rangad) and we’ll see how it goes.

The chef at Regina Margherita. An authentic Italian restaurant in Colombo. This photograph was taken for the Leisure Times magazine back in October 2008.

(Pic:Team Earth Issue2 Cover)
Lets face it, starting and keeping a magazine running requires allot of cash. Almost half of it for printing. What if you don’t need to print it? That’s the idea behind Team Earth Magazine. The entire magazine is distributed though their website and any one can download it. It’s not the usual pdf file either. The entire magazine is done using flash, which allows them to include audio and video clips into it, thus giving the reader a thorough interactive experience.
On the down side, some of the photographs and video clips have had to be compressed a bit but not to the point they’re totally pixelated. If you’re interested, give it a download and see.
Ok this type of publishing isn’t ideal for most magazines, specially in Sri Lanka where internet connections are slow and not everyone has access to the internet, but some publications where they only circulate in Colombo, where most readers if not all have access to broadband connections might find this to be the answer cash strapped publishers are looking for. May be they can pass on the savings to there contributors. (Hint!:D)
There’s even room for advertisers to include animated posters or video clips into the magazine. Though the current issues of Team Earth still don’t include any advertising.
Oh and for the record, I’m by no means involved with Team Earth. I just think this is a cool idea worth exploring.
