The Barber Shop

This photograph was taken at saloon La Passion for the Leisure Times Magazine. The saloon chain had opened a new one in Dematagoda and the Leisure Times wanted some pics. So I was sent to Dematagoda. I had to go with a different three wheel driver cause my usual guy, had disappeared for a couple of weeks. He eventually returned but there were some rumours circulating round LT that he had found a nice girl and had decided to give up the three wheel life. I guess it didn’t work out. Which is kind of a good thing, cause the other dude I had to go with kind of overcharged a bit and ended up getting both of us lost on the way to the saloon. We ended up driving round the wrong end of Dematagoda looking for the saloon. Eventually sense prevailed and we asked for directions and found the place.

Old Memories

Some of my old floppy disks and cds. Back from the days before 4gb flash drives. I remember smuggling in a whole lot of these into school, with one file split into them, only to find one floppy was corrupted and the whole file was ruined. Ah the good old days. Present day youth will never know the pain we went through to watch a 20 second movie.

(Pic:Team Earth Issue2 Cover)

Lets face it, starting and keeping a magazine running requires allot of cash. Almost half of it for printing. What if you don’t need to print it? That’s the idea behind Team Earth Magazine. The entire magazine is distributed though their website and any one can download it. It’s not the usual pdf file either. The entire magazine is done using flash, which allows them to include audio and video clips into it, thus giving the reader a thorough interactive experience.

On the down side, some of the photographs and video clips have had to be compressed a bit but not to the point they’re totally pixelated. If you’re interested, give it a download and see.

Ok this type of publishing isn’t ideal for most magazines, specially in Sri Lanka where internet connections are slow and not everyone has access to the internet, but some publications where they only circulate in Colombo, where most readers if not all have access to broadband connections might find this to be the answer cash strapped publishers are looking for. May be they can pass on the savings to there contributors. (Hint!:D)

There’s even room for advertisers to include animated posters or video clips into the magazine. Though the current issues of Team Earth still don’t include any advertising.

Oh and for the record, I’m by no means involved with Team Earth. I just think this is a cool idea worth exploring.

The most photographed features of Segiriya are the frescoes, while not much attention is paid to the etchings left by earlier pilgrims on the mirror wall. Modern day visitors have taken to vandalism by etching their names on the mirror wall, sometimes even on top of the old etchings. But, who knows, even these bits of vandalism may even be considered as part of our heritage in another two to three hundred years.

Poya
This was taken back in December on Poya day, at a temple in Kurunegala. I can’t recall the name of the temple but we ended up sitting on a rock at the entrance to the temple while chatting away staring at the moon. (Ya, I travel with weird people)

On a technical note I exposed this for 10 seconds while I used my slipper for a tripod. I should thank Abhaya Binduhewa for teaching me this age old photographer’s trick. :D

I did come up with better pictures of this without the telephone cables and less lens flair but I’ve taken a liking to this one.

I’ve been doing this thing where I keep the shutter open for a random amount of time while on the road at night. All these weird effects were made from passing vehicles. I don’t drive, so I need something to keep me occupied. :D

I took these while travelling from Kurunegala to Colombo.
