These pictures are from the Horton Planes part of our road trip. I thought I’d edit them in black and white since it was pretty misty and dull most of the time during our stay there, and it gave the pictures a bit of a spooky feel. Not that Horton planes was spooky, although there are stories about how the planes are haunted by the ghosts of some girls who were murdered and buried there during the colonial days. But they didn’t bother paying us a visit.

The chef at Regina Margherita. An authentic Italian restaurant in Colombo. This photograph was taken for the Leisure Times magazine back in October 2008.

This is a clip from the film “Dreams with Sharp Teeth”, a documentary film about Harian Ellison. In this clip he rants about how Warner Brothers wanted him to submit some work for free, since everyone else was doing it for free. Kind of similar to how most companies here expect designers and other creatives to work for low rates. I think what he’s saying is to value your work and not to just simply give it away.
I got the link for the video from APhotoEditors’ blog post “Sir, Were Not the Taco Stand”. It has a cool clip about how clients want more for less. It’s worth taking a look; even if you don’t really care about these things it’s quite entertaining.
This is Samantha. I took this photo when I was sent by the Leisure Times to photograph the gallery at Alliance Francaise in Colombo last October. He wanted to sell me his Nikon F5 along with a flash gun for ten thousand rupees. Unfortunately I didn’t have that kind of cash on me so I had to decline, but I did promise him I’d send anyone who wanted a film camera his way. Though it has been close to seven months since I met him and I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t have had much trouble selling it for such a low price.
BTW, I did some checking up on the F5 on eBay and Amazon, and the cheapest I could find cost 40k with shipping to Sri Lanka. Hmm, may be I should have borrowed the 10k from a friend. But, given the cost of film, I never would have used it.
