The Jetavanaramaya stupa is said to have been the third tallest structure next to the Great Pyramids of Giza when it was built by King Mahasena (273-301 AD). You can find more detail on this Wiki.

Basically it’s huge. You can’t help but have a sense of awe when you see it up close. The two specks standing at the base are my friends Charlot and Gayan. Kind of gives you an idea as to how large the stupa is.

Back in November, I started working with a new online Magazine called Light of Asia Magazine. They’re still trying to sort out some funding issues and until that’s resolved only one issue will be published for now. Never mind that. When we first started, our idea was to do a feature on a Village transitioning into a modern town. That idea was later scraped, but I did spend a couple of days taking pictures in Hirana, before the editors decided to kill the feature. Below are some of the photographs I came up with…

Village Temple
The dagaba at the village temple in Hirana, the cell phone tower in the background is a sign of things to come. Within a couple of years this once peaceful village will be turned into a bustling town.

Village Temple II
The dharma salawa at the Hirana temple.

No sweat!!!
The palam paruwa at the Hirana thotupala. They’re building a bridge to replace it, but until it’s completed, this is still the only way people in the surrounding area can get across the river. I read somewhere that this particular Palam Paruwa can even transport buses across the river. I’m a bit sceptical about that, but it didn’t have any trouble ferrying this van across.
The Village Bus
There’s a bus from Hirana to Panadura every twenty minutes, though not as crowded as the Colombo buses at twelve in the afternoon.
Last of his kind...
Pretty much the only blacksmith left in the whole Panadura area.
