Was on my way to work this evening when I saw this submerged car just a couple of meters away from the Galle Road in Panadura. All the drains are clogged up with garbage in Panadura so when it rains, a whole stretch of the Galle Road gets flooded.

Here’s wishing everyone a happy 2010. This one’s from last night or early this morning. Raja got a bit hi and decided to launch rockets commando style. His technique, firmly grasp rocket, light it, when it gets hot let go and hopefully it won’t explode in your face. Despite a couple of near misses I’m relieved to say no one got hurt.

Happy 2010 everyone!!!!!!!!!

More than three weeks of rain and I’m sure everyone’s sick of it now. I took this last Monday evening when Mother Nature decided to give us a chance to dry our clothes before it started pouring again. Here’s hoping for some more days like this because I’m tired of wearing semi wet clothes.

Back in November, I started working with a new online Magazine called Light of Asia Magazine. They’re still trying to sort out some funding issues and until that’s resolved only one issue will be published for now. Never mind that. When we first started, our idea was to do a feature on a Village transitioning into a modern town. That idea was later scraped, but I did spend a couple of days taking pictures in Hirana, before the editors decided to kill the feature. Below are some of the photographs I came up with…

Village Temple
The dagaba at the village temple in Hirana, the cell phone tower in the background is a sign of things to come. Within a couple of years this once peaceful village will be turned into a bustling town.

Village Temple II
The dharma salawa at the Hirana temple.

No sweat!!!
The palam paruwa at the Hirana thotupala. They’re building a bridge to replace it, but until it’s completed, this is still the only way people in the surrounding area can get across the river. I read somewhere that this particular Palam Paruwa can even transport buses across the river. I’m a bit sceptical about that, but it didn’t have any trouble ferrying this van across.
The Village Bus
There’s a bus from Hirana to Panadura every twenty minutes, though not as crowded as the Colombo buses at twelve in the afternoon.
Last of his kind...
Pretty much the only blacksmith left in the whole Panadura area.

Stare Down

Two birds stare at each other. Apparently our garden is turning into somewhat of a zoo. Over the past few weeks we’ve been visited by monkeys, squirrels and all sorts of colorful birds. Should look up what these birds are called.
